Welcome to LaserSoft Imaging's SilverFast! Thank you for using SilverFast! Prior to the installation, please note the following in order to assure efficient operation. Important Note: Installing the Manufacturer Software Please install the manufacturer software included with your scanner before you install SilverFast. The manufacturer software includes all necessary driver files for your scanner. Please reboot your computer after installing the manufacturer software before connecting the scanner to ensure the drivers being available to your system. Important Note: PowerPC-Macs SilverFast 8 needs an Intel® Mac to run on Mac OS X. PowerPC® based Macs are not supported at the moment. SilverFast as a stand-alone application SilverFast installs a as stand-alone application, called "SilverFast8" (or "SilverFast8_64" on 64bit Windows® systems) into your applications folder of your operating system. Using SilverFast's Adobe Photoshop plug-in option The SilverFast 8 Photoshop® plug-in requires Photoshop CS3® (10.0) or higher or Adobe® programs, which support the "Native Plug-in Import" function (e.g. Photoshop Elements® from version 2.0). Installing plug-ins from third-party company and SilverFast may cause some problems. (In this case, please contact our support team for more information.) USB and Firewire® devices Mac OS X: It seems recommendable to remove FireWire support in the network settings, if it is not actually in use. Multiple imaging USB and Firewire devices Having more than one device attached with the same interface (USB, Firewire) of the same device class (imaging devices: scanners, print/scan/fax combo devices, webcams or digital cameras with webcam functionality, or graphic tablets) can lead to troubles. In such a case (e.g. error message "no scanner found"), please disconnect all other imaging devices, reboot your computer and check if the problem disappears. The Apple® iSight and Logitech® Quickcam webcams and print/scan/fax devices from HP® and Brother® are already known to be potential trouble-makers. SCSI ID If the scanner is connected to the computer with a SCSI cable, please make sure that a vacant SCSI ID is assigned to the scanner. SilverFast does not support SCSI IDs 0 and 7. It's widely suggested to use ID 2, 4 or 5 for SCSI scanner operation. SCSI controllers You may also use an already installed SCSI card. In this case you may need to change some of the configuration's options, so that the scanner can respond according to the installed card. In general, scanners support most SCSI transfer modes. In case you have problems with the data transfer, please try to use transfer rates lower than 10 MB/s. Mac OS X: Please note that recent versions of OS X (10.3 and later) offer only limited SCSI support. Some controllers, e.g. Adaptec, may fail. Windows XP: You need to install ASPI layer drivers. Please see FAQ on our website for detailed info. Using two different scan programs When two or more scan programs are used simultaneously to drive the same scanner, hardware conflicts may lead to unexpected effects (application crash, corrupt images, etc.). Please only use one scanning application at a time in order to avoid eventual problems. Operating systems SilverFast 8 requires one of the following operating systems (in general): Mac OS X 10.5® or higher Windows XP®, Vista®, and Windows 7® SilverFast 8 is not supporting Mac OS prior 10.5, Windows 95/98/2000/ME and Windows NT 4.0. The files are enclosed in PDF and QuickTime format. In order to read the PDF files, a recent version of Acrobat Reader or other PDF reader software is required. In order to view the QuickTime files, you will need a recent version of Apple's QuickTime Player. Both software programs are available for free as downloads from Adobe's and Apple's websites.
